Northern Arizona Healthcare recently performed its first TOUCH® CMC-1 thumb joint replacement, marking an important milestone in the expansion of this innovative solution across the United States.
The procedure was carried out by Dr. Peter Gibson, who introduced this FDA-approved technology to Arizona after training in Europe, where the implant has been successfully used for over a decade.
During the announcement, Dr. Gibson emphasized how this advanced procedure helps patients restore thumb length, strength, and mobility, offering a significant improvement over traditional surgical techniques.
Unlike conventional approaches that remove bone and rely on soft tissue stabilization, the TOUCH® CMC prosthesis replaces the damaged joint with a dual-mobility implant, designed to restore natural movement and stability.
Early patient outcomes are highly encouraging, with reduced pain, faster recovery, and a quicker return to daily activities. In many cases, patients can resume light activities within weeks, compared to longer immobilization periods with traditional procedures.
This milestone reflects the growing adoption of thumb joint replacement in the United States, as well as the continued expansion of advanced treatment options for patients suffering from thumb osteoarthritis.
